- Augsburg — 1 night

The stops
- 1
Frankfurt
Land, grab an apfelwein in Sachsenhausen if you have the evening, and roll south.
- 2
Würzburg
The Residenz's ceiling fresco is the world's largest; drink Franconian wine in a Main-side wine garden below the fortress.
- 3
Rothenburg ob der Tauber
The walled town every model railway is based on — walk the ramparts at dawn to have it to yourself.
- 4
Dinkelsbühl
Rothenburg's quieter sibling, unbombed and authentic; two hours and a lunch is perfect.
- 5
Augsburg
Roman roots and the Fuggerei — the world's oldest social housing, rent unchanged since 1521 (one Rhenish guilder).
- 6
Füssen
Neuschwanstein and Hohenschwangau from the Marienbrücke bridge, plus Alpine lakes when the castle crowds get thick.
Good to know
The signposted 'Romantische Straße' is deliberately slow country road — budget double the motorway time. Rothenburg's Night Watchman tour (8 pm, in English) is the best €10 on the route. Reserve Neuschwanstein tickets online well ahead; December's Christmas markets are the off-season reason to come.
