The stops
- 1
Queenstown
Bungee, jet boat, or just ride the gondola and eat a Fergburger — then take the Crown Range over to Wanaka.
- 2
Wanaka
Queenstown's laid-back sibling: THAT tree at dawn, Roys Peak if your legs are serious, lake swims if they're not.
- 3
Mount Cook Village
The Hooker Valley track's three swing bridges end at an iceberg lake under Aoraki's 3,724 m south face.
- 4
Lake Tekapo
The Church of the Good Shepherd on milky-turquoise water by day; some of Earth's clearest night sky after dark.
- 5
Christchurch
The rebuilt garden city — punting on the Avon, the Riverside Market, and street art the earthquakes made room for.
Good to know
The Crown Range road to Wanaka is NZ's highest sealed pass — chains can be required in winter (June–August). Distances look short but the roads are winding two-laners; NZ driving times run longer than the map suggests. Tekapo is a Dark Sky Reserve — book the observatory or just step outside on a clear night. Sandflies patrol lake shores at dusk; repellent is South Island currency.
