Sydney to Byron Bay road trip
≈ 858 km · ~11 h driving · ideal in 9 days · 6 stops
Australia's most-driven coast road, and the one that earns it: surf beaches the whole way up, a chain of river towns, koalas and dolphins in the middle, and a lighthouse on the continent's easternmost point at the end. The motorway will do it in nine hours; the point is to refuse.

The stops
- 1
Sydney
Start with the harbour, then walk Bondi to Coogee before you get in the car — six kilometres of clifftop that sets the tone for everything north.
- 2
Newcastle
A steel town that turned into a surf city. Swim the Bogey Hole, an ocean bath convicts cut into the rock in 1820, and eat far better than you expect.
- 3
Port Stephens
Bottlenose dolphins live here year-round, and the Stockton dunes run 32 km — sandboard them, or climb Tomaree Head at dawn for the whole bay.
- 4
Port Macquarie
The koala hospital is the real thing, not a photo op — a working wildlife clinic you can visit. The coastal walk links nine beaches.
- 5
Coffs Harbour
Yes, the Big Banana. Better: Muttonbird Island at sunset, and between June and November, humpbacks passing close enough to see from shore.
- 6
Byron Bay
Walk up to Cape Byron Lighthouse for sunrise — the first place on the Australian mainland the sun hits — then do nothing at all for a day.
Good to know
Allow a week — the Pacific Highway is fast and dull, and every good thing is on the old coast road beside it. December–February is peak summer and school holidays: book ahead and expect crowds. Beaches are patrolled only between the red-and-yellow flags, and Australian rips are not a myth. Byron itself has almost no parking in season; stay walkable.
