The stops
- 1
Zagreb
An Austro-Hungarian upper town, the quirky Museum of Broken Relationships, and štrukli before the drive south.
- 2
Plitvice Lakes
Sleep by the park to walk the lower lakes at 7 am — waterfalls to yourself for one impossible hour.
- 3
Zadar
The Sea Organ plays the waves at sunset; Alfred Hitchcock rated this exact sunset the world's best.
- 4
Split
Diocletian's palace is the living room of the city — add a boat day to Hvar or Brač from the harbour.
- 5
Ston
Lunch stop: Europe's longest fortress walls and oysters straight from the channel below them.
- 6
Dubrovnik
Walk the walls at opening or golden hour, cable-car up Srđ, and swim off the rocks at Buža bar.
Good to know
The A1 motorway is tolled (~€25 end to end). Buy Plitvice tickets online for the first morning slot — by 10 am the boardwalks are conga lines. July–August is peak everything; June and September give the same sea at half the density. The Pelješac bridge means no more Bosnia border crossing en route.
