New Zealand North Island road trip: Auckland to Wellington
≈ 740 km · ~10 h driving · ideal in 11 days · 6 stops
The North Island gets skipped for the South, which is a mistake: this route runs through a working geothermal landscape of geysers and boiling mud, a lake the size of Singapore sitting in a volcanic crater, the best day walk in the country, and a Hobbit village that is somehow not the strangest thing on the list.

The stops
- 1
Auckland
Sails, volcanoes and black-sand beaches. Climb Mount Eden for the crater and the skyline, then head west to Piha for surf that means it.
- 2
Matamata
Hobbiton — the permanent film set in genuinely lovely farmland. Faintly ridiculous, undeniably charming, and the only stop where a guided tour is compulsory.
- 3
Rotorua
Geysers, silica terraces and mud that boils in the middle of a public park. Also the centre of Māori cultural tourism — Te Puia and Whakarewarewa are the real thing.
- 4
Taupō
A lake filling a caldera that erupted so violently in AD 232 that Roman and Chinese records noted the sky. Huka Falls forces the whole Waikato River through a 15 m gap.
- 5
Whakapapa
Base for the Tongariro Alpine Crossing: emerald crater lakes, steaming vents, and the cone of Ngauruhoe. Give it a spare day for weather.
- 6
Wellington
The windy capital, and the best coffee and craft beer in the country. Te Papa is free and excellent; the cable car takes you above it all.
Good to know
The Tongariro Alpine Crossing is a 19.4 km one-way alpine walk that needs a shuttle booking and genuine respect — it is closed regularly for weather and people are rescued off it every season. December–March is summer. Rotorua smells of sulphur; you stop noticing by dinner. NZ roads are two-lane and winding, so add a third to whatever the map claims.
