Namibia road trip: Windhoek, Sossusvlei & the Skeleton Coast

≈ 721 km · ~9 h driving · ideal in 8 days · 5 stops

One of the great self-drive countries: almost no traffic, enormous distances, and a landscape that keeps changing register. Orange dunes 300 metres tall standing over a white clay pan of dead camelthorn trees, then a gravel plain, then a German colonial seaside town where the desert runs straight into a cold Atlantic full of seals.

The route at a glance

  3. Solitaire — 1 night
  4. Swakopmund — 2 nights
  5. Walvis Bay — 1 night

The stops

  1. 1

    Windhoek

    1 night

Pick up the vehicle, buy water and a spare tyre check. A compact capital with German bakeries and excellent biltong to take with you.

  2. 2

    Sesriem

    2 nights

The gate to Sossusvlei. Be at Deadvlei for sunrise — 900-year-old dead trees on cracked white clay under a rust-red dune — and climb Big Daddy if you have the legs.

  3. 3

    Solitaire

    1 night

A petrol pump, a bakery famous across southern Africa for apple pie, and a yard of rusting cars in the middle of nowhere. Everyone stops. Everyone should.

  4. 4

    Swakopmund

    2 nights

Bavaria on the Atlantic — colonial architecture, cold sea fog, and sandboarding or quad biking on the dunes that start at the edge of town.

  5. 5

    Walvis Bay

    1 night

Thirty minutes south: a lagoon pink with flamingos, kayaking among Cape fur seals, and Sandwich Harbour where the dunes fall into the sea.

Good to know

Most of this is good gravel road, not tar — a high-clearance 2WD is fine, but drive at 80 km/h not 120, because rollovers on loose gravel are Namibia's classic tourist accident. Fuel is cash-heavy and stations are far apart; fill whenever you can. To reach Sossusvlei's dunes at sunrise you must sleep inside the park gate at Sesriem. May–October is dry, cool and best. Sesriem–Solitaire is short but slow.
